Jam Bands is our flagship rock band program for youth musicians who have developed basic proficiency on their instrument and are ready to play with others. Students meet weekly in coach-led rehearsals, rotating through different bands, professional coaches, and fellow musicians throughout the year to build versatility and real-world ensemble skills.
The program is divided into three seasons running from mid-August through early June. Midway through each season, every band records songs in a professional recording studio, and students take home both audio and video recordings of their work. Each season concludes with a professionally produced public concert featuring concert lighting, professional sound, and stage effects.
Because strong individual musicians make strong bands, enrollment in private lessons is required. Students may study with an AMP instructor or with an outside private teacher.
-
Students should have a basic level of proficiency on their instrument before joining Jam Bands. They should be able to learn complete songs independently and come prepared to rehearsals. We generally recommend that brand-new musicians begin with private lessons and join Jam Bands after they have a handful of songs under their fingers.
Students must have regular access to their own instrument for practicing between rehearsals. AMP can provide loaner instruments in many cases if needed.
-
Students meet once a week to rehearse in small bands coached by professional musicians. Throughout each season, students rotate through different bandmates and coaches, giving them experience playing with many musicians and adapting to different musical styles. Midway through the season, each band records in a professional studio, and every season ends with a fully produced public concert.
-
No. Jam Bands is designed to complement private lessons, not replace them.
Private lessons provide individualized instruction in technique, musicianship, and practice habits. Jam Bands gives students the opportunity to apply those skills in a real band setting—learning to listen, collaborate, perform, and prepare music alongside other musicians.
Students may take lessons with an AMP instructor or with any qualified private teacher.
-
Jam Bands is generally designed for students ages 12–18. Younger students are typically more successful in our Jam Bands Jr. program, where rehearsals move at a pace that's better suited to developing musicians.
However, age isn't the only factor we consider. If your student is younger than 12 and has developed the musical skills and maturity to thrive in the full Jam Bands program, we'd be happy to schedule an audition and help determine the best placement.
Please note: Programs require a minimum number of enrolled students to run. If a program does not reach the required enrollment, AMP may cancel that session. In that event, families will receive a full refund of any registration fees paid, or, when possible, we will work with you to transfer your student to another appropriate session.
How the Program Works
The following policies apply to all Jam Bands programs. Program-specific rehearsal schedules, billing calendars, and event dates are listed in each program's registration section below. Please read through these policies carefully before registering. If you have any questions, please contact us and we're always happy to help!
Seasons
Jam Bands is divided into three seasons each year—Fall, Winter, and Spring. Each season includes 12 instructional sessions, a professional recording session, and a culminating public concert. Students may enroll at the beginning of any season.
Season Commitment
Whether a student joins at the beginning of a season or mid-season, enrollment is a commitment through the season's final concert. Each student's participation affects the experience of the entire band, so we generally cannot accommodate withdrawals after a season has begun except in cases of significant or unforeseen circumstances. If an emergency arises, please contact us—we'll work with your family to determine the best solution.
Enrollment
We strongly encourage families to register by each season's published registration deadline. Early registration helps us confirm that a program has enough students to run and allows our staff to thoughtfully build bands, assign coaches, and plan rehearsals before the season begins.
Whenever possible, we also welcome new students during a season. Mid-season enrollment depends on factors such as instrumentation, available openings, and the progress of each band. If you're interested in joining after a season has begun, please contact us—we'll be happy to discuss whether we can accommodate your student.
Enrollment automatically continues from one season to the next, so families do not need to re-register each season. Families who wish to discontinue must submit their withdrawal during the published withdrawal window before the next season begins. Withdrawal deadlines are communicated by email before each season.
Tuition + Billing
Each Jam Bands season costs $540. Rather than collecting the full tuition upfront, we divide the season into 12 instructional sessions at $45 each and bill monthly based on the number of scheduled instructional sessions in each calendar month.
The 12 instructional sessions include weekly rehearsals, one professional recording session, and one dress rehearsal. The culminating concert is an included part of the program and is not billed as a separate session.
The first month's tuition is due at registration. After that, tuition is automatically billed on the 1st of each month for all scheduled instructional sessions in the upcoming month. Because some months include more instructional sessions than others, monthly payments vary. Each program publishes a detailed billing calendar so families know exactly when charges will occur and how much each payment will be.
A valid credit card must be kept on file for automatic billing throughout the program
Attendance
Students are expected to attend all instructional sessions, recording sessions, dress rehearsals, and concerts. Because bands function as teams, consistent attendance is essential to the success of the group. If an absence is unavoidable, please notify AMP as soon as possible so our coaches can plan accordingly.
